Summer fun

Last week the boys made some ant houses on our front steps. Their friends Coleman and Spencer helped.

Matthew made signs to attract ants away from Thomas's house.

Sign above says "Welcome ants! Come in! Don't go in the other house." Another sign, not pictured, said "They kill ants!"

Showing the ant houses to the neighbors

We met at the hospital one evening for a Sibling Class. The boys learned all about how to be good siblings to their new sister, Emmeline. The teacher was our neighbor, Vicky Alder, who is a nurse in the maternity ward, where Erika will deliver. Vicky tried to let the children know that one of the toughest things about being a sibling to a newborn is the sudden drop in attention you get from your parents. The kids all just smiled and nodded their heads with blissful ignorance. She also taught them about how to help calm babies down and to be gentle with them, among other things. The boys got to practice taking care of some baby dolls.

Vicky (in the window) held up a newborn for the new siblings to see

We occassionally take the boys to a skate park in Riverton. Last Saturday, when I took them there we sadly discovered that it was closed until further notice to due "trash and vandalism." So we decided to try a new park further away in Draper. It was even better. The boys had so much fun that they have continually begged us to take them back. Despite the distance and lack of shade we've returned a couple of times. Here are some of the stunts they did:

Erika frequently has dinner with the boys in the tree-house while waiting for me to come home. One evening I came home early enough to join them and read stories on the deck. The boys normally don't get in their jammies for dinner, but that day they had made a mess of themselves playing in the sandbox under the trampoline so Erika ordered them to the bathtub early.

Last Saturday I had a fun time with my brothers and sister Sarah watching the new Batman movie. It was an entertaining show and fun to hang out with the siblings. Stephen had the forethought to order tickets weeks in advance so we could enjoy it on opening weekend.

Stephen's wife, Jeana, paid a surprise visit to us a few days ago. She was in the neighborhood visiting some friends and decided to stop by. The boys had fun imagining that their little cousin Eva was their soon to be born sister, Emmy.

Our fun neighbors organized an awesome block party to celebrate Pioneer Day (July 24). We started out with a bike race around the block.

Then we enjoyed music from our block band (Old Kids on the Block?). After some of their singing, the real entertainer on our block--who entertains people for a living--treated us all to some of his original music and impersonations (e.g., of chewbacca). Check out his website: www.jasonhewlett.com

Jason Hewlett's son (above) , Redford, entertained us, too

As I explained earlier, we are wont to have dinner in the tree-house:

Next time I'll include some pictures of Erika. She was photographer this week.
